What is different about shipping out of Scotland
Most household goods leaving Scotland do not leave from Scotland. Greenock on the Clyde handles containers, but the consolidation depots that make up shared loads for most destinations sit near the southern ports, so a Glasgow household is usually trunked to Felixstowe, Southampton or Tilbury before it sails.
That matters for two practical reasons, and neither of them appears on a quote unless you ask.
The road leg is part of the price. Four hundred miles of trunking before the container is even loaded is a real cost, and it is the main reason a Scottish quote can look higher than the same move from Kent. A mover who prices it honestly will say so. One who does not has either absorbed it or is about to find it.
Shared loads run less often from the north. Groupage works by filling a container with several households going the same way. There is simply more traffic heading out of the south east, so a shared container from Scotland to a less common destination can wait longer for enough volume. If your dates are fixed, ask how frequently that route actually departs rather than how long it takes once it sails.
Access, which is the other Glasgow-specific cost
A great deal of Glasgow housing is tenement flats reached by a shared close. That means a stair carry, often two or three floors, usually with a turn that decides whether a sofa goes up at all, and rarely a lift.
Tell whoever is quoting which floor, how many turns the stair has, and what the widest item is. A crew sized for a ground floor terrace and sent to a third floor tenement will take most of a day longer, and on an hourly rate that difference is yours.
Parking is the other one. Glasgow City Council can suspend parking bays for a removal, but it wants notice, and without a suspension the van parks where it can and every item is carried further. On a tenement street with residents' permits that distance can be considerable.
An international move has a currency side as well as a shipping side. We cover it in our guide to moving money abroad.
